Ronda in photographs

Ronda is located in one of the most dramatic locations in Europe – perched 750 metres above sea level, on an inland plateau, sliced in half by the 100-metre deep Tajo gorge.

The town is a photographer’s dream – or a nightmare if there is insufficient film or lack of space on the digital camera’s memory card. Throughout Ronda there are delightful buildings like the ‘Palacio de Mondragón’ and the Casa del Marqués de Salvatierra’.

Nerja - a coastal town

Nerja is a coastal town in the province of Málaga. It is a popular destination for tourists mainly because of its caves but it also has several fine beaches set amidst charming coves beneath steep cliffs.

 The Balcón de Europa is a nice place to visit. It is in the centre of the old town and is a mirador or viewpoint that provides stunning views along the coastline.

The caves are about five million years old and were formed by rainwater seeping through the cracks and fissures in the rock, eroding the layers below to produce cavities and hollow channels. Over a long period the cavities got larger creating enormous chambers. The dripping water also formed stalactites and stalagmites.

Casarabonela - a pueblo blanco

Casarabonela is on the easternmost edge of the area officially classified as the White Towns of Andalusia. It is situated in the Sierra de las Nieves and is yet another attractive pueblo blanco that has preserved its Arabic heritage with its narrow streets and whitewashed houses festooned with flowers. Like many of the villages some of the alleyways are rather steep – on my last visit I left my aged relative sitting on a bench in the main plaza while my wife and I explored the charming alleyways.

An attractive church – the Iglesia de Santiago Apóstle is located in the main plaza. It has some interesting crypts and a museum of silver and religious artifacts.

Cómpeta - a beautiful town in the Axarquía

Cómpeta is an attractive little town set amidst the beautiful Axarquía in the province of Málaga. I visited at the beginning of February 2013 and though it is only 18 kilometres from the coast (Torrox nr Nerjar), it took about half an hour to drive from Torrox to Cómpeta because of the steep twisting road. The town nestles on the southern slopes of the Sierra de Almijara.

Mijas – La Muralla

A favourite spot of mine is ‘La Muralla’ – a park with balconies from where one can view the coast below. It is a quiet oasis away from the bustle of tourists, yet is only a few minutes walk from the centre – just up past the Plaza de Toros.

The views from the Alameda Gardens are breathtaking. The gardens were built at the beginning of the nineteenth century and financed, as the story goes, by fines levied on townspeople found to be behaving improperly. My wicked sense of humour makes me wonder in what way the inhabitants  were behaving in an improper manner. Were they peeing into the gorge? It takes me back to my early schooldays when we would see who could aim the highest!

Ronda - Tajo Gorge & Puente Nuevo

The bridge is hardly as new as its name implies - it was built over 200 years ago! It is the focal point of the town. It is a masterpiece of architecture and engineering but it took 42 years to build and special machines had to be invented to raise the huge solid stone blocks from the bottom of the gorge. Various vantage points on the bridge provide spectacular views of the gorge far below.

Olías - a small village nr Málaga

Olías is a small village in Málaga province. It is located about 20 km from the city of Málaga and about 5 km from the village of Totalán. Olías is situated within the Montes de Malaga, on a hillside about 420 meters above sea level.

Montejaque {Serranía de Ronda}

Getting lost in the narrow streets of little pueblos blancos of Málaga is a pleasure. Montejaque is just such a village. It belongs to the comarca of Serranía de Ronda and is, of course, part of the autonomous community of Andalusia in southern Spain.

It is situated approximately 125 kilometres from the city of Málaga, 21 from Ronda and only 2 from Benaoján. It has a population of approximately 1,000 residents. The natives are called Montejaqueños.

Benaoján - a village in the Serranía de Ronda

Benaoján is a pretty village that I first encountered when I travelled on the Algeciras to Ronda railway. Near the railway station there is a footpath to Cueva de la Pileta - a cave with primitive rock paintings of animals that, apparently, date from around 25,000 BC. Just above the village there is a mirador where spectacular views can be enjoyed - poplar, willow and oleander at the bottom of the valley; evergreen oak, peonies, thickets of kermes oak, retama and broom on the hillside; gorse, thyme and sage beneath jagged outcrops of limestone on higher ground and probably the odd vulture or two circling above.

There are about 300 griffin vultures in the Serranía de Ronda, which is a tribute to the local conservationists as during the 1960's the birds were almost extinct.
