Conejo con ajo
One of my favourite dining experiences is to drive up to the little mountain village of Enix. In Cafe Bar Almería, I order 'conejo con ajo' - garlic rabbit - for my main course. I also order a dish of ajo blanco in which to dip the doorsteps of crusty bread. It only costs a few euros for this scrummy dish made from almonds and garlic but it is enough for four or five people to pass a pleasant interlude whilst waiting for their main course, especially when washed down with glasses of country wine! It is peasant food but delightful!

Immediately behind Roquetas is the Sierra de Gádor mountain range – it is a twenty minute drive to Enix, one of my favourite pueblos blancos. To the northwest is Spain's highest mountain range, the Sierra Nevada, whose southern slopes are dotted with the charming white villages of the Alpujarras.
Enix is a typical pueblo blanco. Often old men with flat caps and walking sticks sit on the benches in the town square busily chatting and watching the world go by. Dogs laze in the doorways of the white houses. Just beyond the town centre, pine and eucalyptus trees border the road.

Algeciras-Ronda railway
The Algeciras to Ronda train journey is a trip through some of the most beautiful countryside in Andalucía. The little three-carriage train winds its way past some of the attractive 'white towns' of the region and through the spectacular scenery of the Los Alcornocales and Grazalema Natural Parks.
British engineers built the line when Victoria was on the throne - I have often wondered whether she had some sort of stomach disorder the amount of time she spent there - sorry - I couldn't resist that! Many of the stations still have the original equipment and furnishings that were shipped out from Britain in the 19th century.
La línea de los ingleses - the 'English Railway' - is actually 110 miles long and continues beyond Ronda to the town of Bobadilla. The line is just one section of a large scenic route that stretches eastwards through Granada and on to Almería.
